Exhibition Highlights

On view through August 7, St Ives: The Modern Coast. The Artists Who Defined Modernism in Cornwall brings the enduring legacy of the St Ives School to Phillips' Mayfair galleries through a curated selection of exceptional paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by many of the movement's leading figures.

ALFRED WALLIS Grey Schooner, Executed in 1933.
On Loan.

Perched on Cornwall's rugged Atlantic coastline, St Ives became one of the defining centres of twentieth-century British modernism. Drawn by the region's extraordinary light, dramatic landscape, and proximity to the sea, artists found inspiration in its unique environment, forging a visual language that bridged landscape, abstraction, and modernist experimentation.

CHRISTOPHER WOOD Drying Sails, Mousehole, Cornwall, Painted in 1930

At the heart of this creative community were Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, whose influence helped establish what became known as the St Ives School. Together with a generation of painters and sculptors, they transformed this once-remote Cornish harbour town into one of Britain's most influential artistic centres, leaving a legacy that continues to shape the story of modern art.
