Essay

Born in Headingley, Leeds, Patrick Heron spent his childhood in Cornwall and Welwyn Garden City. Before he set up his studio on the cliffs above Zennor, on the North coast of the Cornwall in 1955, he drew and painted many scenes of St Ives, often finishing them back at his home in London. Heron deeply admired Georges
Braque, whose studio he had visited a year before completing this painting. Braque’s influence on Heron’s use of space and delineation is evident in this interpretation of a churchyard in St Ives. He was elected into the Penwith Society of Arts along with Terry Frost in 1951.
