Essay

From 1939 Hepworth lived in close proximity to the Cornish landscape that was depicted by many fellow St Ives artists. She reflected: ‘The main sources of my inspiration are the human figure and the landscape; also the one in relation to the other.’ In 1963, this maquette was adapted to a 5.8m-tall sculpture mounted onto the side of the new John Lewis building on Oxford Street. Hepworth was excited about the socialist ethos of the company that is
owned by its workers. She wrote, ‘If the Winged Figure in Oxford Street gives people a sense of being air-borne in rain and sunlight and nightlight I will be very happy.’
