Essay

Canadian artist Jean Paul Riopelle and Zao Wou‑Ki shared a bond that far exceeded artistic affinity; they were lifelong companions, and Zao affectionately called Riopelle his “brother.” Their friendship began at Galerie Pierre Loeb in the early 1950s and lasted until Riopelle’s death in 2002, which moved Zao to paint a triptych in his memory.

Both artists chose Paris to escape the artistic limitations of their home countries, despite having different training—Riopelle rejected
academic instruction and modernity, while Zao received traditional schooling in China. In Paris, they joined Pierre Loeb’s circle alongside Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Georges Mathieu, each evolving toward a painting style where colour came to dominate line and the painterly space was redefined to infinity.

Their shared love of fast cars, lively gatherings, and artistic experimentation deepened their camaraderie. Rare photographs and
anecdotes capture their joyous companionship, a friendship rooted in creativity, freedom, and mutual admiration.
