Essay

Moving to St Ives at the age of eighteen, Mitchell was Hepworth’s principal studio assistant between 1949 and 1959. He was a founding member of the Penwith Society of Arts and a key figure of the St Ives School. Mitchell started out primarily in wood and stone before turning his focus to bronze in the 1960s. Many of Mitchell’s bronzes are named after Cornish landscapes and this work, Trevarrack, was named after a hamlet near Penzance.
