Essay

This bronze bull Taureau (1957) was cast in an edition of one two. Through his shaping and reworking of the original raw material, Picasso plays with the concept of the animal, abstracting it until the bulls’ features are pared down to their most simplified forms. By reducing the animal to its core, Picasso distills myth, history, and identity into his own a singular, timeless emblem.
