Artist Biography
b.1981
Li Shurui was born in Chongqing in 1981 and graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2004. She initially studied traditional Chinese ink painting but became drawn to the greater freedom of modernist art and its resemblance to the mesmerising artificial light patterns of urban China. Since then, she has combined them by painting from photographs of LED screens, breaking them down into hazy, luminous waves of light and colour with monolithic simplicity.
Her most recent solo show was with Carl Kostyál, London (UK,2024). Other solo exhibitions have hosted her work at the Long Museum, Shanghai (CN, 2021), New Galerie, Paris (FR, 2020), and White Space Beijing (CN, 2017 and 2014). Major collections featuring her work include the Rubell Family
Collection in Miami, Ullens Collection, Beijing, Sifang Museum, Nanjing, and DSL Collection, Paris. She lives and works in Dali, China.
