Artist Biography
b.1947
Born in Sicily in 1947, Salvo moved with his family to Turinat a young age, beginning to paint at around the same time. Initially influenced by the minimalist Arte Poverta, Salvo later channeled his conceptualism into figurative painting through a series of dreamlike landscapes drawing on Renaissance art and the vistas of his native Italy by the end of the 1970s. Echoing De Chirico and Magritte in their warm colours, formal
simplicity, and eerie stillness, Salvo’s landscapes have heightened in popularity since the artist’s death in 2015.
In November 2024, the Pinocatecca Agnelli, Turin (IT) will mount the artist’s largest solo exhibition to date. Other large retrospectives include one at MACRO, Rome (IT, 2021), which featured over ninety works. Collections featuring his art include the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, and the European Parliament Art Collection, Brussels.
