Artist Biography

Liu Yin was born in Guangzhou in 1984, receiving her MA from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2010. Having experimented with a variety of media as a student, she now uses her paintings to show different levels of reality-clashing: best known for her still lifes with shojo anime eyes, they create a surreal comic tension between the traditional, ‘real’ representations and the artificial, mass-media tropes. Intimate and whimsical at once, Liu’s images are emotionally complex.

Liu is currently participating in a group show at Tao Art in collaboration with Kiang Malingue, Taipei (TW, until 21 September). She has also received solo exhibitions at Kiang Malingue in Hong Kong (HK, 2023), Arrow
Factory, Beijing (CN, 2015), and the Chinese Culture Center, San Francisco (US, 2011); other group shows include those at ANTENNA SPACE, Shanghai (CN, 2022), M WOODS, Beijing (2015), and Import Projects, Berlin (DE, 2014).
