Artist Biography
b.1979
Born in Shanghai in 1979, Shi Zhiying received her MFA in Oil Painting from the Fine Arts College of Shanghai University. Her monochromatic paintings break down vast, anonymous landscapes into minute variations of black-and-white brushstrokes, combining photographic clarity with a painterly lightness of touch. These have alternated with more colourful, intimate still lives of stones and gems –both display the same meditative eye for detail, drawing out the transient beauty of the natural world.
Continuously popular, Shi was recently honoured with a retrospective at the Yuz Museum, Shanghai (CN, 2024). She has also been given solo shows at SPSI Art Museum, Shanghai (CN, 2023), White Space, Beijing (CN, 20222), and Orange County Museum of Art, Costa Mesa, California (US, 2017), and her work appears in prestigious collections including the Power Station of Art, Shanghai, X Museum, Beijing, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. She lives and
works in Shanghai.
