Exhibition Highlights

YoYo Lander's arresting colleges celebrate the intricate beauty, profound strength, and genuine vulnerability of her subjects. Her work intricately captures the nuances of the human form and movement, portraying the rich depth of her subjects’ demeanor with compelling precision. Lander employs a unique technique of layering cut pieces of stained watercolor paper over watercolor backgrounds, creating textured, multihued bodyscapes that invite viewers into an immersive experience of color and form.

Superposition Gallery was founded in 2018 by artist and curator, Storm Ascher. She started her curatorial projects with a mission to subvert gentrification tactics used in urban development through art galleries. Superposition Gallery puts on exhibitions, performances, and events highlighting young emerging and mid-career artists from around the world to foster relationships with collectors and institutions. Representation by Superposition Gallery gives artists a platform to exist in multiple contexts at once. By collaborating with spaces that have a consciousness of the neighborhood in which they reside, Superposition Gallery takes on the life of the nomadic artist and resident., The gallery engages in curatorial thought with a focus of creating community. Taking on the life of the nomadic artist and resident, curatorial projects come to fruition through iterations of borrowed space in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and internationally.

Superposition Gallery and Phillips Los Angeles present their latest collaboration, featuring new works by artist YoYo Lander. Titled Yesterday Was Hard, the show is an evocative collection of figurative collage works that invite viewers into a world of introspection and transformation. The portraits in this series unveil deep contemplation with each subject adorned in a sweater of varying shades of green. Lander’s deliberate choice of green serves as a vivid metaphor for growth amidst adversity. This subtle juxtaposition masterfully encapsulates the complexity of living in the present, as the figures navigate the shadows of the past and the whispers of tomorrow.

“These portraits serve as poignant vignettes, capturing the essence of reflection as the subjects wrestle with the echoes of yesterday’s challenges.”

An additional layer to the show involves a collection of abstract pieces titled “The Speck.” These works delve into the human tendency to magnify a single perceived flaw, allowing it to dominate one’s sense of self. Yet, from a broader perspective, this monumental flaw is nothing more than a speck — a minute detail within the vast and intricate tapestry of our complex lives. Lander’s abstract pieces invite viewers to embrace a broader perspective, revealing the profound beauty and richness that exist beyond our perceived imperfections.

“After having had the pleasure of working with YoYo through group exhibitions in the past, I am delighted to have the opportunity to curate a solo exhibition of her more recent explorations with fibered textures and abstracted forms, all rendered with her well-known paper collage process. After seeing what she could do with skin color and texture, I think the LA community will be enthralled with these two new series. I love seeing when an artist moves into another form of their well-known process, especially when the transition is between the figurative and abstract. Both series conceptually draw on resilience and the introspective process of being better to ourselves,” said Storm Ascher, Curator and Founder of Superposition Gallery.
