Exhibition Highlights

PhillipsX presents There’s Something About You: Celebrating the Influence of French Aesthetics on Women Artists Through the Generations. This selling exhibition highlights the transformative contributions of leading French women artists from the 20th and 21st centuries, exploring their enduring influence on a diverse array of contemporary global artists who have drawn inspiration from their work and the broader French cultural landscape.

Niki de Saint Phalle A Amis, Executed on 1 April, 1974

Delving into the profound impact of French aesthetics, this exhibition examines how these visionary women have shaped various artistic movements, from modernism to postmodernism and beyond. Their innovative approaches have not only redefined traditional art forms, but have also challenged societal norms, making significant strides in feminist discourse and representation within the arts.

Yayoi Kusama Infinity Nets [YRSEZ], Painted in 2017

Featured artists include Françoise Gilot, a prominent figure in the post-war Parisian art scene known for her vibrant palette and dynamic compositions; Marie Laurencin, celebrated for her ethereal portraits and exploration of feminine identity; Niki de Saint Phalle, whose bold, playful sculptures and activism have left an indelible mark on contemporary art; and Miriam Cahn, whose powerful, emotive works confront themes of identity, violence, and the human experience, further enriching the conversation around women's roles in art.

Françoise Gilot Still Life with Pitcher, Painted in 1945

In conjunction with these pioneers, the exhibition also showcases contemporary artists such as Yayoi Kusama, whose immersive installations and distinctive polka dot motifs echo the experimental spirit of the French avant-garde; and Claire Tabouret, whose
evocative portraits explore themes of identity and community in a modern context. Together, these artists form a dialogue that bridges historical and contemporary perspectives, reflecting the ongoing relevance of French aesthetics in today’s art world.
