Exhibition Highlights

PhillipsX is pleased to return to Knokke-Heist, Belgium this season to present Summer Wave, a pop-up exhibition at VILLA PAQUEBOT.

Bringing together works by Harold Ancart, Joseph Beuys, Lucio Fontana, Günther Förg, Keith Haring, Alex Katz, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, Kenneth Noland, George Rickey, Sean Scully, Cindy Sherman, and Frank Stella, among others, the exhibition spans more than seven decades of artistic innovation. From postwar abstraction and European modernism to contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, and conceptual practice, Summer Wave celebrates the dynamic exchange of ideas, materials, and forms that continue to shape the history of art.

Painted in the years following the Second World War, Nature morte aux papillons exemplifies Fernand Léger's pursuit of clarity through form and color. Familiar domestic objects—a jug, vessel, and butterfly—are distilled into bold contours and vibrant planes, transforming the traditional still life into a dynamic composition. The brilliant primary palette and emphatic black outlines reflect Léger's belief that modern painting should possess the visual immediacy of contemporary life while remaining grounded in timeless compositional principles. Executed during one of the artist's most celebrated periods, the work affirms his enduring influence on twentieth-century modernism.

Executed in 1967, Keen Transit belongs to a pivotal moment in Kenneth Noland's career, when he began experimenting with shaped canvases that challenged the traditional boundaries of painting. The elongated diamond format guides the eye through luminous bands of color, allowing geometry and chromatic rhythm to become inseparable. A leading figure of postwar American abstraction and the Washington Color School, Noland transformed the canvas into an active element of the composition, making works such as Keen Transit enduring examples of his innovative approach to color and form.

Graceful yet rigorously engineered, George Rickey'sTwo Open Triangles Up (Non-gyratory) transforms polished stainless steel into an elegant study of movement and balance. Responding to the slightest currents of air, the sculpture produces a slow, ever-changing choreography that reshapes the viewer's experience. Inspired by Constructivism and kinetic art, Rickey combined engineering precision with sculptural poetry, creating works that reveal motion itself as an artistic medium.
