Exhibition Highlights

PhillipsX is pleased to return to Knokke-Heist, Belgium this season to present Summer Wave, a pop-up exhibition in partnership with AQUALEX.

The exhibition brings together works by Bram Bogart, Alexander Calder, Stanley Whitney, Jean Dubuffet, Giorgio Griffa, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Andy Warhol—all united by the theme of water and its dynamic potential. Together, these works create a compelling dialogue between contemporary art and innovation.

AQUALEX, our collaborator for the exhibition, has a strong presence in Knokke and develops drinking water systems and multifunctional designer taps for filtered water.

Among the celebrated artists inSummer Wave, a highlight is Stanley Whitney (b. 1946), whose vibrant approach to abstraction brings vital energy to the exhibition’s exploration of water and movement. With color at the heart of his practice, Whitney has developed a powerful visual language shaped by chromatic experimentation and a ‘call and response’ technique between neighboring hues. He lives and works between Bridgehampton, New York and Solignano, Italy, and his work is held in major collections including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Another highlight of Summer Wave is Alexander Calder (1898–1976), whose dynamic forms and kinetic innovations offer a striking counterpoint within the exhibition’s rhythm. Born in Pennsylvania, Calder originally trained as an engineer before committing to his artistic practice in 1923. Celebrated as the inventor of the ‘mobile’, his work draws on his technical background and the Surrealist aesthetics of 1930s Paris. His sculptures are held in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice.

Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985) brings a raw, radical spirit to Summer Wave, challenging traditional notions of beauty and technique within the exhibition’s broader dialogue. The French painter and sculptor was known for working outside academic conventions, embracing everyday subjects and materials in a deliberately unrefined style he termed art brut. Rejecting aesthetic norms in favor of the human and the primal, Dubuffet’s work is now held in over 60 major public collections worldwide.

Adding a meditative rhythm to Summer Wave is Giorgio Griffa (b. 1936), whose quietly expressive abstractions evoke both restraint and lyrical movement. Based in Turin, the Italian painter works primarily on raw, unstretched canvas, using a delicate, diluted palette and a visual language of repeated lines, dots, and geometric forms. In 2022, his work was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
