Exhibition Highlights

PhillipsX is pleased to present a comprehensive selling exhibition featuring important works on loan and for sale by the artist Françoise Gilot. Celebrating her life and her incredibly varied output, this retrospective aims to elevate and offer a fresh perspective of Gilot’s legacy following her recent passing, just over a year ago at the age of 101. The exhibition contains works executed between 1942 to 2015, showcasing the breadth of her output in nearly every decade of her career.

While her artistic practice has almost always been introduced in the context of her relationship with Pablo Picasso, Gilot’s life an as artist began when she started painting at three years old. The exhibition features an extremely rare 1942 landscape, Le Bois d’Isis, executed when the artist was just 21 years old. Rendered in bold pinks and greens, her mastery of volumetric forms is clearly apparent even before she was fully ensconced into the School of Paris community.

Her life was rich in every sense of the word, taking her from rural France to La Jolla and finally ending on the Upper West Side of New York. Her iconography is extremely personal, continuing to welcome us as the viewer back into her world time and time again with ingenuity and hospitality.

A distinctively female voice, Gilot’s output embraces her role as both Mother and painter, two roles which even contemporaneously continue to diametrically oppose one another.

She explained that “As young women, we were taught to keep silent…We were taught early that taking second place is easier than first. You tell yourself that’s all right, but it’s not all right. It is important that we learn to express ourselves, to say what it is that we like, that we want.”

Gilot’s work focuses and celebrates her world: those she loved, blooming flowers, and exciting locales she had the chance to travel to.

“I see life as a labyrinth. You don’t fight it. You go where it takes you.”
- Françoise Gilot
