Exhibition Highlights

PhillipsX is pleased to present Dialogues, a collaborative exhibition between The Here and There Co. (THAT) and PhillipsX. The exhibition will feature new artwork from four alumni artists from THAT’s Studio Residency program, paired with artworks by artists from the art historical canon from where the THAT residents have drawn inspiration.

Now in its third year, the residency continues to focus on early-career artists based in and near New York City. This program operates with the goal of offering time and space for artistic practices to expand and evolve at a secure pace. The featured artists are Justin Han, Anna Ting Möller, Huidi Xiang, and Ye Qin Zhu. The four artists come from distinct backgrounds and introductions to the arts resulting in vastly different practices and artworks. Yet, the clear throughline amongst their practices is their dedication to their individual creative processes and their ability to share their visions with larger audiences and communities.

Anna Ting Möller works in a diverse range of artistic mediums including sculpture, installation, video, and performance. Their work highlights what the artist refers to as kombucha’s “corporeal potential” and its ability to follow “material logic.” The practice engages with the life cycles and lineages of SCOBY as a means of creating complicated but illuminating metaphors for human relationships.

Ye Qin Zhu is a multi-disciplinary artist working within and between abstraction and representation via the lens of identity, spirituality, and emotion. Recently, he has been combining elements of painting and sculpture through his relief works, focusing on the “material reality” of the works themselves. Zhu’s layered use of found and crafted objects forms dense aggregates of intersecting stories.

Huidi Xiang makes sculptures and installations that reimagine pop cultural products and phenomena, constructing alternative narratives to unpack emerging labor forms and structures in late capitalism. By using imagery and characters to which she has a personal or nostalgic attachment to, Xiang creates a set of tools and a language to point towards the violence inherent in the merging of boundaries between what she has referred to as “work time” and “non-work time.”

Justin Rui Han assembles visual systems in which unlikely congregations take shape. His recent work responds to histories of technology under empire, borrowing and contorting the visual languages of engineering and industrial extraction. He uses textile, wood, and paint to translate such imagery from film stills, direct observation, and archival sources.
