Exhibition Highlights

Art of the Covenant: Global Africa at the Crossroads is presented by Joshua Dekking in collaboration with the Asaa Group and Phillips. Timed to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly, Art of the Covenant explores a singular, urgent theme: the spiritual contract we hold with our ancestors and our children - the inheritance we carry forward and the obligations we owe to those who come after us. At a moment when heads of state, cultural leaders, and global citizens converge on New York for the UN General Assembly, this exhibition asks audiences to consider Africa's past and future not as separate chapters, but as a single, continuous covenant.

"Art of the Covenant is about connecting my father's world with mine," said Joshua Dekking, organizer of the exhibition through Anomaly Advisers, a subsidiary of The Asaa Group. "I came from a world that was dominated by one demographic. Now I'm bringing that knowledge to this new demographic. This is the new generation connecting the past with the future." Dekking's father is Nanne Dekking, founder of Artory who served as Vice Chairman and the Worldwide Head of Private Sales at Sotheby's in New York.

Gbenga Akinnagbe, known for HBO's "The Wire" who will appear in the upcoming Aaron Sorkin film "The Social Reckoning," is co-curator of the exhibition. "Supporting this exhibition is supporting the global majority as we tell our own stories. Supporting artists who've done the work to undo those stories and to tell our own stories is key to the health of the world." (Akinnagbe)

MANYAKU MASHILO How about a New way to Pray, 2023

Art of the Covenant features works by Arthur Jafa, Jerome Lagarrigue, Harmonia Rosales, Zizipho Poswa, Taiye Godbody, Manyaku Mashilo, Seven Bullion, Cheick Diallo, Chinemerem 'Eme' Omeh, Kandy G Lopez, Thokozani Mthiyane, and Faith Ringgold, whose practices engage memory, migration, spirituality, and the visual language of the African diaspora.

Each artist brings distinctive perspectives shaped by ancestral knowledge, contemporary practice, and diaspora consciousness. Together, their works create a powerful dialogue about identity, belonging, and the ongoing legacy of African peoples across the globe.
